Engaging Your Child in Spiritual Disciplines

Spiritual disciplines are important to our growth spiritually. They play an important part in a young persons spiritual journey as well. Spiritual disciplines are not about earning or proving to God that we deserve the salvation we have freely received from Him. Instead, spiritual disciplines are about creating habits in our lives that point our souls toward God. Left to ourselves we naturally drift from God. Spiritual disciplines give us guidance as we seek to grow and mature.

My hope is that you don’t look at this list of disciplines as things that you need to make your child or teenager do. Instead look at you child’s life and find ways to encourage these behaviors. Have conversations about what it means to grow spiritually and what it takes to do so.

Over the next several weeks we will look at different spiritual disciplines and how they might look in a child’s life. We will also discuss creative ways to engage young people in the spiritual disciplines.

Here are some of the spiritual disciplines that we will be looking at over the next several weeks:
-Meditation
-Prayer
-Bible Study/Memorization
-Fasting & Unplugging
-Service
-Giving & Gratitude
-Worship
-Celebration
