Helping Your Child Learn to Worship

Worship is often thought of as singing to God. The truth is worship is so much more than that. One of the key things we need to teach our children about worship is found in 1 Corinthians 10:31 (NIV), “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Wow our kids can worship God in everything they do. They (and us too), can worship God with their life.

Below are three areas that we can help our children learn about worship:

When they see God. God is doing amazing things around us all the time. As we go through life we have opportunity to see God work. It could be through the majesty of His creation, answered prayer, or through his blessings in our life. When we observe Gods work, speak it out. “Did you see what God made? Isn’t it amazing? Isn’t he a creative God?”

In their activities. God created each child to be unique. I their uniqueness some kids like school work and some don’t. Some kids like sports, others like art. The reality is that in all activities our children have the opportunity to worship God. How? By giving their best because what they are doing matters to God. You can remind your child of this when they are engaged in their activities, but remember it is equally as important that you exemplify this in your life.

In Corporate worship. When we gather together with other believers we have the opportunity as a community to lift up the name of our God. This is often done through song. Through the years I have observed that many young people love to worship God by singing out to Him, but this is not always the case. As I work with young people I like to focus on the heart. It is important to not always go on out word behavior, but instead to ask you kids questions about their worship that will give you a glimpse into their heart.

Questions about how they enjoy worship, why they enjoy worship and why they worship may give you some insight into their hear and my open the door to a deeper conversation.
