Helping Your Child Learn the Bible

We are in the midst of a series of Parent Posts on spiritual disciplines. This week we are focusing on helping your child learn the bible. This is the discipline of Bible study and memorization. Today I want to give you a few thoughts to help you parent your kids in a way that they are encouraged to know the Bible and then give you a few resources that might be helpful.

How to help your child learn the Bible:
  1. Model the importance of knowing the Bible- Allow your kids a glimpse into your study and memorization habits. For some it might mean starting the discipline yourself. For others, it might mean opening the door while you study. For me it meant studying the Bible in print instead of on my phone or computer. Could I still study from my devices? Sure, but it wouldn’t look any different to my kids than me checking email or sending a text.
  2. Encourage your child- Whether your child is young or in high school use encouraging words to cheer them on as they seek God. Ask them what they are learning. Ask if they have a scripture studying or memorizing goal.
  3. Teach your child- Show your child good passages or stories from the Bible for them to study. Devotional guides or Bibles may help older kids, while storybook Bibles will help the young ones. Have them ask questions about the passages they read. For example: What is God trying to teach me through this verse? What is this verse teaching me about God? What should I do differently as a result of reading this passage?
  4. Don’t force them- I know this might seem counter intuitive, but don’t engage in battle over the fact that they will or will not read or memorize the Bible. Remember God is not interested in religious actions, but heart change.
