There is no shortage of information on how to parent your children. You could do a Google search and return thousands of results. You could search books on the subject and there would be many options. There is a lot of good information, but my problem is that info can be overwhelming. I need a simple memorable approach to raising my kids.
Here is how I keep it simple. I ask myself how does God parent me when… (insert your current parenting circumstance here). Some examples of circumstances where this thought process has helped me are when I have disobeyed, when life is hard, when life is good, when I give God attitude, etc.
As I think about God’s overall parenting style, here are 4 ways that God parents us that come to mind. (Disclaimer: Remember God is not the human parents you grew up with, good or bad. God is the prefect father, the perfect parent).
-God’s children are his most valued possession. His children’s value does not come from what they do, but instead come from that fact that they are HIS.
-God instructs and guides his children in choices that they have to make. God doesn’t shelter his children from exposure to sin. Instead, He let’s them make choices, even mistakes; and then forgives them when they mess up.
-God makes sacrifices for his children. God did whatever it took to care for his children’s souls.
-God is a gracious parent. God gives his children gifts they don’t deserve simply because he loves them.
