Preparing for the Trip

It's going to be cool in a few place we will be this summer.
I should have picked this up when I had the chance.
For a journey like ours, with so many destinations over an extended period of time, there is a lot of preparation that needs to take place. There is a wealth of information on the web that has helped with the planning of our trip. Here are some of the most helpful websites.

  • REI- has great checklist that are specific to activities (ie. Camping, traveling, hiking, etc.) They also have great advice for family outdoor activities. Here are a few of the check list s that I have used.
  • The Nation Parks Service- For every park the National Park Service has several pages dedicated to planning your trip. Everything from camping reservation advice, to things to do, to what to wear.
  • FuelEconomy.gov- will help you map out your trip and calculate your fuel cost. This site takes into consideration both the vehicle you drive and the cost of gas in the locations you will be.
  • Weather.com  You are probably familiar with this site, but you may not know you can get daily year round averages for both temperature and precipitation. I was surprised to see how cold it is going to be at some of the places we will be staying. To find these helpful averages search the location you will be going and then from the menu at the left choose "Monthly". From the page that opens you can navigate to the month and dates that you will be away.
