Letting Go

So this past weekend my oldest son pitched for the first time. He had practiced pitching to me many times and always had a desire to be a pitcher, but this was his first real chance. Out there all alone, just him against the batter.
He was calm, cool, and collected. Me, not so much. I have seen many more experienced pitcher walk and hit batters and cost there teams many runs. Not a big deal to me, but had seen Joel have been heart broken more than once when he had allowed a run to score because of a defensive error. My desire was for my son not to have his heart broken like that again.
Turns out our nervousness was unjustified and his confidence in his pitching was right on. 1 Walk 0 hits 1 run (unearned) and 2 strike outs. He was amazing.
As parents there are many things we prepare our kids for and then we have to let go and let them do it on there own. So what I learned from this whole thing is to relax, trust that they can do it, encourage them, and be there for them.
